MARCH 2022 ALES MEETING

Good Day ALES Members,

It has been a while since the website has been updated, but here we are now, updating regularly.

March 2, 2022 Meeting:

  • Topic: Smoked Malt

  • Beer Style: Smoked Beer

  • PLEASE NOTE: Meetings will now be at 7:00 PM at the Bushwakker Club Room

A few time that upcoming events:

  • Big Brew Day - we have determined that the ALES Club will be hosting the Big Brew Day in May this year at Pile O’ Bones. By popular demand the BBD style is a Russian Imperial Stout. We will be setting a firm date soon. This year we’ll seek advanced payment to secure a carboy to ensure we brew the right amount on the POB system.

  • April is IPA Month and we are doing the single hop, brew your own, event. If you do not have access to the “discussion” email list but want to participate, email Brennan Miller. For hop information before you choose, check out Prairie Brew Supply.

  • The ALES Open will continue as it did in 2021 with a regional competition where the top 3 members will send beers to the national homebrew comp. We’ve determined that this event will be in June. Make sure you start planning your beers now to submit for judging.

NEW EXEC MEMBER

We are happy to announce that the ALES Exec team has added Mederic Lanoix. He’s been a regular to the ALES meetings and has the knowledge to assist in any discussion that is going on. Here’s a bit about Med:

Mederic bought his first homebrewer's kit in 2007 and brewed through University while studying microbiology. In 2012 he got his first professional brewing position at Les Brasseurs du Nord, one of the largest craft breweries in Quebec. In January 2019 Mederic moved to Berlin, Germany to attend the Certified Brewmaster course at the historic VLB institute. After getting his diploma, he came back to Canada late summer 2019 and was hired as Head Brewer at the Warehouse Brewing Company in Regina and rapidly got his ALES Club membership card. After two years in the club, he joined the executive committee in February 2022. Aside from delicious craft beer, Med loves hockey, formula 1, art galleries, long walks on the beach and rooms full of kittens.

COVID CUP 2020

Hey Everyone!

Since it is seeming more and more likely that there will not be an ALES Open again this year we have decided to organize the COVID Cup.

General Details

**This competition will only be open to Saskatchewan Residents**

  • Entering is free!

  • Prizes?! Probably!

  • How many entries can you have? Well, depending on interest, let us say 3 to start and we will see how much interest there is, and we can allow for more entries later if need be.

  • We will not be doing categories, this is a winner take all type of competition.

  • Judging will be done to BJCP guidelines for the style you enter the beer as.

  • We will be filling out scoresheets which we will give to you after the competition is over.

  • Entries must be in by 4pm on December 18th 2020 at Prairie Brew Supply. Just let Kevin know you are dropping off for the competition.

  • Judging will take place at the end of December 2020, with winners to be announced in January 2021.

To enter, you will need to:

  • Send an email with what type of beer(s) you want to enter (style number and style name ie 21A American IPA), the name of the beer (if you have one), and your name to gregberner@gmail.com.

  • Package four bottles of each entry. Two will be for initial judging, the other two will be if your entry makes it to the finals for further judging (each judge will have a bottle at their own home to score).

  • Attach the identifier code to your beer that I will assign to it in response to your entry email

  • Drop it off by 4pm on December 18 at Prairie Brew Supply. Also make a purchase when you are there because Kevin is awesome.
